How A Motoring Icon Was Born

It's difficult to believe that the modern svelte, gadget filled and aerodynamic Land and Range Rovers has their origins in a project that was only supposed to have lasted three years. It was in 1947 that Englishman Maurice Wilks created what was to be recognised as the first of the Land Rover variants. His experience as Chief designer at the rover Company where he worked closely with his brother Spencer had led him to believe that he had the answer to the cash flow issues that were preventing the company from establishing a 'market car' assembly operation. The project was to be a short term one - designed to inject that much needed cash into the operation - the reality was that from these humble beginnings emerged one of the most iconic motor vehicles ever designed.

The fist models were unassuming to say the last. Centre steering and a Jeep chassis and axle setup were legacies of the surplus vehicles that were still widely available after the end of WWII. The camo green paint was also part of that legacy.

The idea that the Land rover would simply be a short lived project of necessity soon fell by the wayside as the popularity and sales figures soared. By 1970 Land Rover had sold its millionth vehicle and was now part of the British Leyland Motor Corporation.

In 1994 Land rover and its sister operation range rover were bought by BMW. This arrangement was short lived and soon Land rover was to change hands again - this time becoming the property of Ford in 2006 for the bargain basement price of $8m. By 2007 the the fourth millionth vehicle had rolled of the assembly line - a Land rover Discovery 3.

Soon Land Rover was to change hands again. In 2008 the company, including Jaguar Cars Limited and Land Rover Limited became part of India's Tata Motors.

Today Land Rover continues to go from strength to strength. Although the production of the iconic box shaped old style Land Rover Defender is no more - pushed aside by technological innovation Land Rover continues to lead the pack with vehicles such as the ever popular Discovery and the Freelander continue to capture the imagination of those who want to explore the wilder side of nature - off the beaten track. And for those longing for old school fun - but some creature comforts the re-imagined Defender is the way to go.
