Volkswagen was created when Adolf Hitler hoped to create a car that was both fast and affordable for the people of Germany. Volkswagen created its famous factory in Wolfsburg, Germany. Wolfsburg was created as a town where factory workers would live and work. They built the iconic Beetle. The Beetle promised to go up to 35 miles per hour and drive at least 60,000 miles before it needed any repairs.
Volkswagen was the main manufacturer for military vehicles during World War II. The factory was bombed several times and the city was even handed over to the British at one point.
After the end of World War II, Volkswagen was nearly out of business. However, the Allies decided to help Volkswagen with a fresh start. Many American companies were given the opportunity to take over Volkswagen. But, even Ford passed on the chance.
Volkswagen began importing cars worldwide in 1949. The first car that was exported was called the Type I or Beetle.
By the middle of the 1950s, the Beetle was very popular. In fact, there were almost 35,000 on the road by 1955. By the 1960s there were almost a half of million. The Wolfsburg factory had to work hard to keep up with the demand. They were making about 900 Beetles a day. The Beetle took over the Model T as the most popular car ever created.
The popular movie ?The Love Bug? featured a Volkswagen Beetle. This movie made the car even more popular and iconic. There were several sequels made and even a remake called ?Herbie Fully Loaded? in 2005 starring the famous actress Lindsay Lohan.
Volkswagen understood that they needed to diversify their line up. They added more cars to their inventory in the 1970s. The company found success with models like the Golf, the Polo, Passat, and Sirocco.
